Things to know when searching DeLIver:

  • Remember that this system covers only 50+ journals. To search a system with the abstracts of over 4,000 journals and conferences, use the INSPEC and COMPENDEX bibliographic databases.
  • The system ignores all punctuation-- it is treated as a blank space;
  • The system is not "case sensitive"-- "MIT" is the same as "mit";
  • "*" is the truncation symbol-- to find all words that being with "comput" type "comput*";
  • Words entered in the same input box will be searched as an exact string match, so if you type "suspension bridge" or "steven miller" in the "enter name, word or phrase" box, the system will look for that exact phrase, character for character;
  • Try searching for names by using last name, first initial; then selecting OR MAY CONTAIN; and then typing last name, first name in the "additional terms" box.
  • "Nearby" means within 5 words.

Things that DeLIver can do that most other systems can't:

  • Search the full text (title, abstract, text, figure captions, table captions and bibliography). To do this, select "anywhere in article" in the "select parts of article box"; or
  • Search only specified areas of the article such as the figure captions or bibliography by selecting different areas of the article to be searched in the "select parts of article" box.
  • Display the first article abstract, figures and references over the web by selecting "extended citation"; then
  • Display the full text of many articles by selecting "Full document" (in either PDF or SGML formats).
  • Browse the contents of journals and articles by clicking on the "browse" button.
  • Print out the abstracts, figures, references, even the full text.

Things to keep in mind in your overall searching:

  • DeLIver has a limited number of journals included in the database;
  • DeLIver only goes back a couple of years; and
  • DeLIver should be used in conjunction with other search systems, some of which are available via DeLIver's "related resources" link.
