HOW IT WORKS
The first box on the upper right side of the search form is titled "Searchable Fields." In this box, you can select only ONE area of the article to be searched by highlighting that line in the box. This is telling the system to look for your search term in that particular area of the article. Herein lies one of the unique features of this system: you can be very specific in your searching by telling the system you want particular words found in specific places. If you want to search in several areas of the article, such as the title of the article and the abstract, you must use the "Also Must Contain" and the "Additional Search Term" box if you want only articles containing the term in BOTH places. Use the "Or Must Contain" if you want articles containing the term in EITHER place. There you must re- enter the term to be searched, then select the second area of the article to be searched.
If none of these are selected, the default is to search "Anywhere."
DEFINITIONS OF FIELDS
"Anywhere": will search for articles with search term(s) in all of the fields listed below.
"Article Title": will search for articles with the search term in the main article title only. Does not include titles in the references or figure and table captions.
"Title, Heading, or Caption": will search for articles with the search term in the main title, any heading, or in any figure or table caption within the article
"Article Author Name": will search for articles written by specific author(s)
"Article Author Affiliation": will search for articles with the search term in the author affiliation field. Use it to find articles by authors of a particular institution, such as the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Only articles whose author affiliations are given in exact the exact form of your search term will be found (e.g., if you type "UIUC" as the author affiliation, it will not find authors from the "University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.")
"Any Author Name (including cited Authors)": will search for articles written by a particular author and also for articles with that author cited anywhere in the article.
"Anywhere in Article Body": will search for articles with the search term in the main text of the article. This excludes bibliographic information at the end of the article and introductory information at the beginning of the article such as the article title and the abstract, but includes figure captions and table text as well as article headings.
"Abstract": will search for articles with the search term in the article's abstract. The abstract is the summary at the beginning of each article.
"Table Text": will search for articles with the search term in the text of any table itself or in the table caption, if this text is provided by publishers. Some tables are images only and thus cannot be searched.
"Figure Caption": will search for articles with the search term in any figure caption, if these are provided as text by the publisher. Some figure captions are part of the image of the figure and therefore cannot be searched.
"Cited References": will search for authors cited in the article but not the author of the article.
"Journal Title": will search for articles within a specific journal such as Applied Physics Letters, or Journal of Bridge Engineering.
