University of Illinois D-Lib Test Suite Quarterly Report for January-March 2001

Collection Growth

More than 5,020 full-content journal articles were processed, indexed, and added to the testbed.  This includes over 150 articles from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).  We are using these articles as a testbed from some of our latest experiments with XML, including extracting Resource Description Framework (RDF) Dublin Core (DC) metadata and the conversion and rendering of MathML.

Open Archive Initiative and Metadata Schema Refinements

We continued development of the UIUC OAI metadata provider service using metadata extracted from testbed materials (see previous quarter's report).  In conjunction with this work we began experimentation with alternate metadata formats for use with OAI, specifically RDF and Qualified DC.

Technology Transfer and Consultation

In late January three members of the project staff made a site visit to the American Institute of Physics' (AIP) headquarters in New York to discuss the transfer of various of our XML technologies to AIP.  This included programs for converting SGML to XML, for extracting metadata from XML files, for providing citation linking data, XML Schemas to replace SGML DTDs, and web server scripts for rendering the XML in various web browsers, including the mathematics.

Long-distance talks were also held with the Beacon Group, the publishing service bureau for the American Physical Society (APS), on possible process improvements that they could implement in relation to the APS files that are sent to us.

Additional work was done in the conversion of the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) article metadata into the AIP Searchable Physics Information Notices (SPIN) metadata records for use with the American Institutes of Physics' Online Journal Publishing Service (OJPS).

Appropriate Copy / Local Resolver

Work continued with the implementation of a test local resolver service for the Grainger Engineering Library.  A "doi.org" cookie referring to our local resolver service was added to a prominent library web page.  The local resolver implemented the CrossRef reverse lookup, using the metadata returned to build a web page of local resources relevant to the originally requested DOI.  However, the local resolver was actually used very few times, we think probably because of the scarcity of linked DOIs available to users from other sources.

Visitors

Stephen Matich from the University of Waikato in New Zealand met with project personnel to learn more about the project and how it could possibly be applied to digital library projects at his home institution.
